Plenum for Heat Distribution?
I have an older building, that we are remodeling.
My tech wants to install a plenum, by dropping the ceiling of a hallway 8-inches, to feed hot air from an electric furnace into the four bedrooms, and bathroom that are off the hallway. The existing ceiling is dry wall, and he proposes to just fram in a new ceiling, sheath it with dry wall, and theninstall registers over the doors to feed into the rooms.
He insists this will meet code. I have read through the 2009 International Residential Code, and I’m not sure if it does or not.
Can anyone clarify this for me?
Thanks, Randy.

The IRC allows building cavities to be used for return air only--not for supply air. (M1601.1.1, #5, #7)
Yeah probably not legal. Small expense to have a trunk duct made to fit inside the ceiling space w/ some short branch ducts to feed the spaces. A call to the BO locally will give you the answer, though. If he's doing other work, maybe he has a permit already?
