The DWVs in this 40 year old house have begun to emit sewer gas (thankfully not inside the house. We had the septic tank pumped, but the problem persists. We’ve contacted two plumbers who believe the problem must lie with the septic system, but the sewer expert says there is nothing else they can do, and the problem must be with the P-traps. Anyone have an idea what’s wrong, what to do, or at least which of the trades to call?

Chan, I'm not a sewer expet but I am a state certified plumber. Your problem to me seems to be an out dated septic system. No septic system is a life time system and if the fields have filled with sludge due to lack of cleaning the life can be shortened. Try the building department in your area, they can probably answer alot of your Questions or at least direct you in the right direction.
