I have a guest room with separate electric water heater. Replaced water heater approx. 2 years ago. Recently the hot water emits a “rotten egg” sulpuric smell when turned on. The cold water is fine and emits no odor. Smell dissipates after a while but returns after a day or two. I am looking for a explanation/solution to this problem. All comments are appreciated. Rohner

I think that you have a bacteria. If you do then you have to flush your pipes. I think that they use bleach or hydrogen peroxide. My guess is that you do not use the bathroom much and that gives the bacteria a chance to grow so, you might get the smell again if you fix it and then don't use the bathroom for a while

It's the anode rod. it's a sacrificial magnesium bar inside the tank, that is removed by a hexagon bolt on top. I've seen that problem a lot, especially in areas where the iron content is high.
BarryE, Thanks for the advice. Any tricks to get the rod out. Put my breaker bar on the nut to no avail. Drained the tank. Will this help? Thanks again. Rohner
We don't usually have to empty them completely, just a gallon or so. Also turn off the cold water into the tank and of course the pilot control. Then open a hot water faucet somewhere in the house to help relieve the pressure. When all else fails get out the cheater bar. You'll need some leverage. good luck
