I need to replace 2 plastic ball valves in my irrgation system. The valves are in a box that is set into the ground 4 feet. The old plastic ball valves are longer than the replacement metal ball valves. In-between the 2 valves is a flow regulator and a filter with unions at each end that allow me to remove the filter and flow regulator for inspection and repair. The pipe size is 2.5 inches. We get gravity feed pressure about 90 psi.
What I need to know is how do I figure out the length of the pipe nipple that I need to take up the space that was increased by a shorter valve. I can measure the distance between the end of the valve and the union. How many inches or threads does the pipe need to go into the threads of the valve or union?
Thanks
