Good Day Folks,
I have a problem with a vent pipe on a bathroom creating a nasty smell on our deck when it’s cold out. It seems inversion is bringing the smell down to deck height and when we’re in the hot tub on cold evenings it’s obnoxious. The vent is approximately 14 feet from the hot tub.
Is there anything you all can think of besides rerouting the vent to a higher location? Doing so would necessitate cutting into the ceiling as the attack space above this bath is only 3′ at the peak. I’ve looked at air admittance valves but I don’t think this will work on the exterior.
Thanks so much!
Tim

Tim,
There are several plumbing vent cap devices that filter or mask the odor, google " Sweet Air ".................... MikeL

Thanks, Mike! This looks promising!

Yes, you definitely should not put an AAV on the external vent -- that could be dangerous.
It is a little curious, though, that the smell is so bad. Do you have a septic tank, or are you on sewers?
Yes, you definitely should
Thanks for the reply, Dan. It's a septic system and this is the closest vent to the tank.

If you haven't had the tank serviced in a couple of years you might want to have someone check it.
Simple, put a cap on the vent when you are in the hot tub, esp if a septic system. You probably dont even have to worry about aspiration sucking the water out of a trap if just for short term capping.
You do have to worry about going back in the house and discovering it filled with phew.
Great Idea
go up on the roof every time you want to go in the hot tub.
How could something be so simple.
You might also be able to encourage the flow of air in the vent system to go elsewhere if there are other vents thru the roof, like maybe enlarging and raising a vent that is closer to the highest part of your roof.
