It says in FHB #184 Page 93 that you can glue and screw plywood to a plank subfloor to create a stiffer floor.
My question: is is it safe to use glue given that the plank floor will expand and contract while the plywood is relatively stable?
Has anyone done this successfully?

Numerous times. Works so well that I can tile over it. No problems. Subfloor planks typically have a big gap between them.

I did a 100 year old kitchen floor like this a week ago, using PL Premium and 3/4" BC. Floor is so stiff now you'd think it was poured concrete. Tile guy very happy with the lack of bounce in the floor now.
We have done this many times and it has worked great. We use PL Premium and screw the plwood right through the plank and in to the joists with longer screws.
This will really tighten things up and prevent squeaks between the plank and the joists.
The planks are usually bone dry after having aired out for years and we have never had a problem tiling over a setup like this.
Thanks to all for the help and encouragement.
