When I was installing for a K&B Co. I'd template the top ( the actual PB that would become the top) and after I picked it up at the laminater's shop, they all had pocket screws ( pre Kreg, just a trough, no pilot hole) and in scores of tops, never had a crack.
If I was hinky about it, I'd maybe clamp the BS to the top and pilot thru the kreg hole with a long 3/32" bit.

I'm building the top and use the kreg jig so it is piloted through the splash. I did one recently without pilot drilling the top with no problems except thinking about it after the fact and pondering the risk. I have another one ready to go out and the splash goes on on site. Clamping is a given. Any other opinions about predrilling the top? Thanks!.
Well, I look at it like this..if my "little voice" says " Ya think ya might wanna drill that?" and I DON'T? It will crack. If the little voice stays quiet, and I don't..it's ok. It seems when I go opposite of my gut..things go wrong.
Like if the wife askes during a wind storm, should she move her car from under atree..if I say..Nah. it'll be OK...I garunteeeee you, a tree will fall on it..LOLSpheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

Sometimes, given two choices either answer is wrong. In my experience..
Slightly off topic, but my favorite backsplash trick is making a tiny, 1/8" x 1/8" rabbet in the bottom front edge of the splash's PB.
When you bed the splash in caulk, you trap a nice, big bead. Great protection for the PB.

Great idea. Low investment insurance, my favorite..
