I am having a difficult time finding engineered plans for a large (24′ x 30′) pole shelter to use as a carport. Can anyone help refer me somewhere?

It is not a terribly difficult structure but since you require engineered plans, I assume that your local permit agency requires engineering.
That would mean that it needs to be engineered to a certain set of required specs.
In Mountains there is a high snow load to design for.
In Florida, there is a high wind load to design for.
In short, you need someone local or you need some design parameters to start with.

Thanks for responding. You're right on with the permit and development office. I'm a good "common sense" engineer but the permit office doesn't lean highly on common sense. one question I seriously need answered by the way is if the posts should be cemented into the ground (say w/ .60 treated)below frost of course for shear strenth. I'm in Iowa by the way. I'm afraid cason type footings w/ posts bolted on top would add a shearing problem only solved through cross bracing or cables, and I would like to keep my exterior as open as possible. it's in a valley, and the wind, snow and dead loads have been taken into account. It's mainly the posts (8x8's) I'm in question about. Thanks again, Dave
You are right that mounting the poles atop piers would kill your shear strength and eliminate one of the primary reasons for building with poles.
I normally never set a post in crete. It just gives the frost an irregular surface to get a grip on.
Sorry, it still sounds like you need a local guy to satisfy them..

twogroovy, are you a gambling type person??, do you have a little/lot of time on your hands?? In my 1982 ubc, chapter 23, some info. I did oh, lets say, a lot of time spent, researching wind gusts, then the city told me look at chapter 16. As I was told on this forum, it's not that simple, well, twogroovy, I will tell you myself, "It's not that simple". I would suggest, if you are comfortable with the math, research and your plan, of your pole barn, present it to the governing body, right around 9:00 am, ask them politley for an overview/ plan check, of your "proposed pole barn" prior to start. Did I ask you if you were a gambling person? Jim J
One of my all time favs, was a place called Sues Rondezvous. Five stages, two girls per stage.....they often had to share the pole.... wink, wink, nudge, nudge!
We don`t call em "pole shelters" round here.....we call em "gentlemans clubs"....I like your name though....got a nice ring to it. Bet it throws the old ball and chain off the scent a bit, no?

Born and raised in Pelham....liked it so much decided to raise my own family here.
I haven`t been to Sue`s in ages, but it was a regular stop in my younger days. Used to be a place just over the bridge in the BX, Pretty Woman?, that was fun to visit as well...dunno if its still there. Lots of them are shutting down in this neck o` the woods....allegations of prostitution. But I swear 'Nothing goes on in the champagne room!'J. D. Reynolds

We have a place here called "The Lumberyard". Throws the old ball and chain off every time. By the way our upper crust clubs, I refer to as breast lounges. love to see the wheels rollin' when I suggest that one.
