We've had an old 1" pool table slate cut down for a peninsula counter top. It will be used for food prep and for eating at. The cutter radiused the corners, sanded it smooth and applied a sealer. We were real pleased with its look, until we started to use it. Water rings and smeared baby food and everything else were leaving marks. Appearantly, the sealer wasn't adequate. We are attempting to fix it ourselves.
We sanded the slate bare with 150 grit in a pad sander. Now we have applied several coats of a mira matte sealer. We like the sheen, and it seems to be a durable finish, but we are having trouble getting brush marks out. Any advice? Could these be buffed out? Should we re-sand and re-apply something ? Could we use an oil finish?
Thanks for any advice.
*Sand it. And thin the sealer before subsequent coats.
*if the sealer is sprayable, you will get smoother finish.
