Bob, My mother in law could help you out, at 93. Well, the only help would be to drop a can of tomato sauce, she then would try to wipe it off the ceiling.
In most cases, unless (doubtful if not too old) it's been painted over with good oil paint, you can scrape it off.
One method is to visqueen the floor, drape painters plastic on the walls. Take a garden sprayer and mist the ceiling. Using at least a 6 inch drywall knife, scrape it off. The water softens the bond. Use low angle with the knife-being extra careful at the taped seams. You may have to lightly sand when dry.
Check if it's made from asbestos too!
