I’ve recently replaced my porch posts with 4″ x 4″ Doug Fir (which I chamfered), having wrapped the overhead beam and completed the ironwood deck that was floated over a concrete slab. l’d like to finish the posts off with some detail on the tops and bottoms. The house is very simple (see attached photos). Can anyone suggest some possibilities or attach photos for ideas?

Here's what I just did at my place. We did a wainscot of brick on the bottom of the posts and then wrapped the top with rough sawn cedar. Also wrapped the beam. We first built the posts and beams up with 1/2" osb to beef them up a bit to make the overall look a little more beefy looking compared to the brick. My wife was concerned that the top half would look really funny with the bottom so big with all of the brick. Anyway....it turned out really nice....she loves it and we had a lot of nice comments at our recent open house when we moved in.

Nice job! They tie in nicely with the rest of the house. In my case, wrapping the posts is probably not an option, given how close they are to the edge of the deck. I'll barely have room for 1" by.
How about you wrap them with a 1x6 at the top and a 1x10 at the bottom. Take a router and your favorite ogee bit and put a fancy edge on the wrap before installation.George Patterson
look at som column suppliers for some ideas. some companys offer two peice composites to wrap arounf existing 4 x 4's.
