Would like suggestions on what the preferred model/make might be. Looking for quality over price. A tool that can take some meat off the wood as it will be used mostly in renovation work. Thanks for your input.

I have the Bosch 3-1/4" electric plane. The better of the 2 they make. I had the cheap Bosch at one point, but killed it. The better one is a workhorse.
I bought this one as a reconditioned tool, and saved about 20-25% off list. And still got the full warantee.
Thx's for the input.
I have three of the small Makita'a with the solid carbide reversible blades and one of the monster 6" Makita for timber framing and have been very happy with them.

I have the small corded Makita (3 1/2") with the reversible blades, works like a charm. Last year I bought the Bosch 18V cordless, and wish I hadn't, It doesn't give a very clean cut.
For timberframing/log houses, I have an 8" Makita planer. I really don't use it that much, but its a superb planer. They kept the old design, same cast iron, not much plastic at all, a good tool.

Thx's to all who responded...
I have the same 2, I almost never use the Malita because the Bosch cordless works so sweet. You must have gotten a bad one.
No way!! I wonder if I have the blades on wrong or something..... I'm going to take a look at it first thing tomorrow morning. I like the Makita, but I really hate the cord getting caught on everything in the room when I use it...

Thx's for the input....
I've got the Makita and am mostly happy with it. The only time it annoys me is when I'm hogging out wood with green cedar logs; it tends to clog (but then so does my buddy's Bosch).

Thanks for your input.
Depends on what you want to do with it. For an all around planer I like Makita's N1900B. Been around for ages and tough to kill. For doors Porter Cable's 9118/126 planer. It's been discontinued but there's NOS still around and I see them time to time on eBay. Expensive- they're over $400 new. For smaller beams Makita's 6 3/4" 1806B.

They started making them again after a lot of complaints.http://www.cpoworkshop.com/specialty_tools/planers/9118.html?ref=googaw471&kw=%7Bkeyword%7D&gclid=CPLhn8K265gCFQEoGgodVGph1w&keyword=porter%20cable%209118
Afaik what's out there is existing stock ........ it's discontinued for the second time. Not listed on their website and Coastal Tools lists it as discontinued. PC rep a while back said something about 126, 503/504 belt sanders, model 100 and 310 routers not meeting some upcoming UL reg(s) so they were being discontinued.

Thanks for the feed-back. Intended use now would be for "butch work". Widening existing window opening 3/16th to 1/4" for new windows etc. Would like to remove some "meat".
"Butch work" is primarily what we used the boss's Makita for- hogging out RO's. I tried to save mine for doors. I'd pick one up to see how it feels vs the Bosch before I'd part with my $. I like the Mak much better in that regard but you may not. One advantage the Bosch does have is dust collection- the Makita has none unless you spring for an optional dust nozzle. On the Bosch it's built in and can be swapped to either side. Not an issue for me but it might be for you.

Thx's again
For butch / ugly work, consider a $60 planer.
I've had a cheap B&D for many years. If I want to remove paint, or think there might be a hidden nail, out it comes. It makes the first pass or two, until I can see clean wood.
Doing this has saved the blade on my Porter Cable more then once. buic
The one that seems to get the best reviews and earn reliablity praise is the Mikita..
Do not get the Delta.. What a POS and their service is horrible!
