“Porter Paints” any good? Better? Best?

Haystax | Posted in General Discussion on February 25, 2009 09:15am

Looking for interior paint for the new house. Local store carries Porter Paints brand. Has anyone used this paint and how does it stack up to other brands? Not really thrilled w/HD Behr but that and Ralph Lauren are options. Would be willing to order or make trip to get better options.

It is my own house so we want good paint…period. No experience with any higher end paints whatsoever. I’ve always just used the Ace or True Value brands from little local hardware store.

We will most likely prime/seal drywall before texture is applied if that makes any difference in recommendations.

Thanks for your input!

Craig

I have never heard of that brand ... but that, by itself, doesn't mean much.

IF this is a local paint manufacturer, a regional brand, chances are it's pretty good.

IF you're buying it from a local paint store, the type that caters to pros, chances are it's a very good paint.

AS has often been mantioned in painting threads, the paint is the least important part of the paint job. Preparation, preparation, preparation. Cleaning, patching, caulking, etc., are critical to a good paint job. Any stains, smoke, or sap needs a primer to seal it in; a primer will also help different surfaces (like painted drywall and a patched area) have the same final texture.

Not a bad product at the higher end of thier line. At the builders/painters grade level they are below Sherwin Williams IMO.

I use to use Porter exclusively 25 years ago, but they seemed to slip a little and I moved to SW.

I haven't used any in the last 10-12 years, so take this for what you paid for it <G>

That seemed to be the standard when I lived in Wichita, KS.  Both houses I bought had been painted with it.  I did not have any problems but I was not as into it as I am now.  I guess I would have to put the grades they used at mid road.

For those who have fought for it Freedom has a flavor the protected will never know.

Love my Porter Paint.  I've used it for over 25 years, tried Ben Moore when a buddy opened a store, but I went back to Porter.  I find it to be excellent.

Never used Porter. We mainly use Valspar (with good results). I also really like Sherwin Williams. Goes on well and has a taste you just cant beat!

Family.....They're always there when they need you.

Around here, it's the gold standard, but that may not be because of the product as much as the generally better product educated store employees. It's what I use on my house.

Also cause they big manufactureing plant right here in Derby City.

They offered me a lab job back about 77 but I was already self employeed as a remodeling contractor,....on the way to making my fortune,........not!

I had a commercial acct. with Porter for many years, but switched to SW about 10-15 years ago when I felt I got more bang for my buck in the painters grade product line. Top end they about equal IMO.
