I am interested in purchasing a power nailer for cedar shingle siding. What is the best type of nailer? I am looking at a 16 ga. stapler on a coil siding nailer and would like to use the nailer for other applications.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

hey steve- i've got the hitachi nv 65 ah the nails it takes 1 1/2- 2 1/2" nails the capacity as far as nails go is 200 with plastic collation , 400 with wire i like the plastic less jambs with the wire there very close together. and a lot more inconsistency's as far as the way there collated. the way to get better success i've found is name brand nails (hitachi).a much better success rate. it ways around 5 lbs with the nails. i've installed to date 617 sq. to date, without a hitch. i've dropped it a total of 5 times 4 of which were over 10 feet. nothin' wrong . i'm real stickler about maintenance, so for every 8 i 've used it at least 1/2 to 3/4 of an hours maintenance. i take apart the nose piece(by the way just pops open with a push of the lever) blow it out, and scrub with toothbrush with w-d 40 . the basket is easily adjutable to accomidate the diffrent sized nails. metal carriage , plastic cover. which told me durability. i like this gun , the one i have can bounce nail (fast repeatitive) and handle it well. some times when the p,s,i get low that when there is a tendency to double nail jamb, like i said the nose piece pops right open with a small push of the thumb, and where back at it. the jambs happen every 2 coil of nails or so . the cost 400+ but for what work i have to do , it well worth it. no regrets cheers the bear
I gather this is a coil nailer, What about using staples for cedar shingles? What about other uses for either type. I am trying to justify the expense as I won't be doing as much work as you do.
Thanks in advance,
steve- the reason i perfer a nailer to a stapler in m.h.o depending on the reveal is the way the shingles expand and contract .i believe with staples over time there is a tendency to check/ crack. now what i have read in this forum there a hell of alot of our brethern using staples. and altough i prefer nails i be willing to bet a staple provided it doesnt overly penetrate the shingle it will be just as good and who knows maybe even have added benefits. i would venture to guess in hurricane/ tornado areas maybe that would be the way to go. one last thing, i had to peel some shingles off the wall to add a window. and i tried to salvage the shingles with a set, and other tools. with the ring shanks. FERGETABOUDIT, these things had a permanant address courtesy of hitachi. and also the gun has more versatile applications, cheers the bear.
