I’m doing my first sidewall shingling job, and thanks to previous discussions here, I think I know how. But am puzzled by what material to use to prestain the shingles. I want to keep the natural browntone color. Is a penatrating finish like Penifin the right product? Help, please. Ken in Montana

The Maibec brand from Canada can be bought sanded and resquared and prestained but I don't believe they have a natural finish. They do custom colours though with the Cabot line of stains so they might have a clear finish available at the custom pricing. Minimunm order is ten squares.
I loive that blonde cedar colour too but it doesn't last long. UV rays and mildew acount for most of the greying. Bleaching oil is their most common prefinish I think because it adds apreservative oil and precolours them to about the same colour of an older shingle.
Hand dipping can be done too but it's terribly time consuming and for the natural colour its un-necesary. I would spray with the oil of your choice - say CWF after applying them.
If you spray with a colour, the shingles can shrink back and leave barren natural colour in contrast to the stain. this is the reason for dipping to get colour up in the lap area.
Hope all this helps.
