Preventing a New Foundation from Bowing
I had a basement of 12″ block built under a 16′ x 32′ wing of my house by a group of local Amish. This is a 150 year old house. There had been no basement there. They lifted that portion of the house and later set it down on the new foundation. There is nothing from above anchored into the foundation. One half of the area above (a 16 x 16 room) is in need of a new floor, which is to be conventionally done – dimensional lumber floor joists.
Are these walls OK without anything bracing them, such as floor joists? Since new joists are to be added, I could secure the new sill plate to the block. There is not a lot of room and it will be kind of difficult to do, so that is why I am asking.
