Preventing scuffs on stair risers

user-639707 | Posted in General Discussion on November 27, 2004 08:18am

I primed, then painted my stair risers with two coats of white interior latex semi-gloss. I’ve also stripped, stained, and polyurethaned the stairs themselves and added cove molding. After just a few weeks, however, the risers are showing signs of wear: dark scuff marks on virtually every one. Any way of preventing this, other than installing a stair runner or walking down the stairs sideways?

    don't use the stairs...

    ladder to an outside window...

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming

    Carpet the risers.
    Paint them black.
Or use a dark stain and a clear finish.
Take your shoes off in the house.
Administer a savage beating to anyone you see kicking the risers.

    yep.

the best painter I ever met told me about this, and I do it all the time-

after paint is dry-30 days for latex-hit with h2o  base poly from a spray can. 3 coats in a couple hours. Love it on deep windowsills, built ins, stuff that takes alot of wear.

somebody owes me a beer now.

So you've had it?  I've seen brats jump out of the kettle when they saw that coming.

There should be a law against using Brew City's name on a bad beer that's made in Detroit.  Makes us look bad.

    Remove stairs.

     Install Elevator.

Well, since you arent getting much practical advice.

You can cut pieces of high density foam pipe insulation and apply it to the toes of all the shoes or boots in the house.  I like to use Super 77 or some other spray on contact adhesive.  Some people simply use duct tape, but, I find that looks a little tacky.

Have you tried a heavy coat of paste wax? Check out the shoes that are being worn. Seriously, some shoes are much worse for this than others.

Paint them again, then put clear water base polyurethane on top.

    1. user-639707 | Nov 28, 2004 05:30am | #16

Thanks guys. I'll probably try regular poly instead of the spray. No kids in the house (well, a newborn, but he doesn't count in this instance), so I'm not too concerned about little feet running up and down while it dries. I did install a fire pole, but it only cut scuffs down by about half.

The great discipline of shoes off in the house is probably the best solution.

    Always clean stair risers

I have beautiful wood stairs and the idea of carpeting them was totally out of the question. The thought of dragging a vaccum cleaner up and down the stairs was worse than painting over them every two months (or holidays when family visited).I remember waking up at 3 am in the morning dreading painting those stairs again! Growing up with a mom who would not allow her children to touch the walls (because if your walls are dirty-your house is dirty) having  scuffed-up, dirty stair risers is not an option in my home. But they dont have to be. There is a new product on the market called NARODI SCUFFGUARDS that you apply to your stair risers  that prevents  them from getting scuffed or dirty, no one even realizes they are there! I've had them on my stairs for over a year and have not had to clean them since. Great investment! They will probably be on my stairs after I move. I wonder if they will increase my property value? Check them out NARODI SCUFFGUARDS.
