I’ve been a Fine Homebuilding subscriber for several years now, and still am not sure what the published sq foot price shown in articles means.
Does the sq ft price represent the cost of the dwelling only, or does it include the price of the lot?
Will be contracting to build next year and need to understand how the numbers are derived.

It means whatever the writer/editor want but never includes the price of the lot. When we are helping owners with their preliminary budgets we include all the cost of the house except utilities, roads and landscaping. The only way to do it accurately is to figure the sf price after you have finished the job.
