Primer for trim around a shower surround
Putting in one of those Kohler shower surrounds (Vikor?) which is designed to be installed in new construction, but this is an old house so I firred out from the plaster walls and screwed the surround to the furring. Did not fir all the way up to the ceiling, so my top rim is a 2X2 plate, with a knee wall at one end and furred out from the wall at the other end. The top plate and end studs stick up and out enough to provide nailing surface for trim to finish this off.
(Please don’t knock my technique, as this was a DIY family group project so don’t even go there)
So being the more advanced of the DIY’rs here, it’s up to me to trim this out, and I’ve decided on pine top caps, and end pieces.
Question is…what should I prime the pine with? None of this will get direct water spray, but will inevitably get secondary moisture. Top coat will be a fairly good grade of semi-gloss latex. I’d like something with a fairly quick dry time.
I know this is compromised already, but you know how family projects go.

Prime with an oil base. Cover Stain from Zinser dries in an hour. SW also carries fast drying oil primers. Might consider an exterior semi-gloss for a topcoat. Works outside. Should work in a moist environment indoors better than an interior product. Another option is the Perma White Semi gloss (Zinser) bathroom paint. Dries hard and has mildewcide added. Nice sheen as well.
I'm using exterior trim in my shower and window casing, the pvc sort. It's my place so the extra cost is worth not worrying about the paint and wood. Actually I dumpster dived the trim so there was no extra cost! Muahhahaha!
ahhh, so it should be mbdyver then.

as a trim carp on high end commercial jobs I see a lot of waste. Prefinished trim, 11' doors, casing, exterior material. If it's in the dumpster, or leaning on it, and it'll fit in my truck it's mine. It helps to be friendly with the laborers as they;re the ones usually told to toss the stuff. Back of my truck, dumpster, what's the difference? It's not recycling, it's "precycling"!
wood in a shower??? Running out of ceramic tiles?
