Primitive Tools that Work

basswood | Posted in Tools for Home Building on August 25, 2008 03:29am

I have a crude, site-built, joist and stud tweaker… nothing very special about it, but it sure works well.

Any others out there?

i picked up one of the anchor screws that they use to secure jobsite trailers down with.  I cut off the spiral end and the other end fits 2bys perfectly.

Ya know, BW, I don't know if this really counts as a tool so much as a tool modification but I have forever been wanting to share this tip.

I trimmed out this multi-million $ house that had all 8' doors in it; and when I case out a door I use two guns: a brad nailer inside the case and a finish nailer outside the case. Usually no big deal do hold one between the legs and switch out. But on this house, all had to be done from a ladder.

So, I took a simple stair rail bracket and screwed it to the side of my 4' ladder. And there ya go, a ladder with a nail gun hanger!

I use it all the time now.

      That's just too funny!

Did you make sure that both buckets were oriented the same way or was that just coincidence?

The bails are handy tho, after you trip and fall, a coworker can grab the bails and haul you to the dumpster.

I used to use paint cans for nailing the bottom of bridging. I could slip in and out of them easily.

I haven't a picture handy, ( but will attach a google if I find one) of a "block knife". Before I had a Lion type Miter Trimmer, I made one.

Picture a stump, and a screw eye in it the top, hinge/screw eye a machete to the fixed eye..at the end away from the handle.

Add a riser block or fence and by levering against the eye(s) you have a precise slicer for shaving down all sorts of treenware and even mitering..pretty cool and quiet..albeit hard to drag around the site.

I believe it was a chair bodger's tennon maker among other uses as a dowel pointer for pegs.

Hmmm..no picts on google, Underhill showed me how to make one, I got mine around here somewhere, minus the stump.

        ED: Might work..nope.
