Got a very frustrating problem with a Sterling unit heater that’s been converted for LP. I hung this thing about three years ago and every year after setting idle for the summer, the unit refuses to fire until the electronic ignition assembly has been replaced.
This is a unit which has no standing pilot, but rather one is established via a small glow wire when the thermostat calls for heat. Next, the pilot must prove itself to the main gas valve via a flame sensor rod and then only is the main gas valve allowed to open to the main burners.
We’ve tried removing the assembly and cleaning the flame sensor rod of any residues that accumulate from the LP, but to no avail.
Talked to the tech guys at Sterling last year…..again….and they sent out a new main gas valve. No change in performance from that. The unit will only operate correctly again after a new ignition assembly is once again is installed. These are Honeywell ignition assemblies.
This problem seems to have everyone around here and the tech guys at Sterling completely baffled.
