I was reading a framing book and it seemes everyone was using a large framing hammer and not a nailgun. Does anyone still use these big hammers? They must have been 28 or 24 oz.

Prescriptive codes don't address the connection at less common angles, so base the connection off more typical ones using bolts, structural screws, blocking, and steel tension ties.

John- I'm not a production framer and I still prefer to use a 22oz Estwing, especially when assembling walls flat on the deck. Know some guys who prefer a framer's hatchet, 28oz I think........Just my preference for building tight, accurate framing. -Ken
*John, I'm not a framer but I do have a 28oz Vaughn that I like a lot. Sure makes the job go quicker and the price is justifiable for the occasional user. My Dad used one for as long as I can remember and they seem to last.
*john... i am a framer... and i also have a 28oz vaughn in my truck box... where it stays...i'll let the fng use it..my new framer is the stilletto titanium...and the new bostich magnesium n88rh...BTW, before blue takes a fence, i get paid for framing.. as i get paid for everything i do... but framing is definitely NOT my game.. we just do it in the normal course of events
*I use Paslode nailguns and when I swing a hammer it is a 21 0z. Deathstick, straight handle. I am a framer, as quoted, "God's gift to framing!" but that's another story. It's not necessarily the hammer but htte way you swing it.Jim
*Mike, I don't let the fng use my tools, he gets the ones the last fng dropped when I ran him off the job site shaking a 28oz Vaughn at him. Just kidding of course.Steve
*22oz Vaughn for me. I use to swing a 28oz Estwing till my wrist and elbow couldn't take it any more. I let the fng carry the bfh.:-)Dave
*I swing a 22 oz Vaughn, I hate it. I have played with the new Ti hammers and like the feel better. I am just waiting to relegate my Vaughn to "Concrete Duty" With that said, my grandad was a journyman, he never swung anything greater than a 16 oz hammer. One swing to set, one to finish. As I was growing up I watched my dad do the same thing. We are wimps with our new hammers and nailguns, but we will live longer.......
*tknight.. Demo work, not concrete, can't beat milled head for taking out plaster.
*I use my big Hart hammer with an 18" handle for framing walls and driving pole barn nails. Don't remember how heavy it is - Maybe 32 OZ? It works great if you have room to swing it, and actually hit the nail. (-:But probably 90% of the time I just use a 20 OZ Estwing. That other one is just too heavy to carry around all the time.
i am a 22yr veteran, and i swung a 28oz for 20 of those years and now i swing a 16......so much more versatal and easy on your arm. i got hooked on this hammer because i have been in nailing contests and they always made us use a 16 so i practiced with one two weeks in advance and i liked it and thats all i use now. i remember laughing at a oldtimer for using a 16............my how time changes us!!
22 OZ. Stainless Hart Woody has kept me a happy swinger for the last ten years.I have to re-file the waffle on the head because it wears down from use, and it still has the original handle.Bob
