We’re now beginning the install on this old Orphanage/ Daycare building a National Register property from 1869.
We stripped the upper roof of 8″x14″ slates- salvaging many for use on the Mansard. 12″x14″ salvage from another School across town being used for the upper roof.
We prepped the decking first then added the lath cant strip, drip edge then ” felt stripped” the copper with 9″ Grace.
Starter course, slates, then old wooden brackets to keep us off the slates.

Thank you very much Vic. If you want to climb a nice set of OSHA approved stairs some morning to check out the view- come on over!
I'm going to a small job Tues or Wed then work here again on the weekend when there will be no children around.
Walter
That would be great Walter, I've always liked that building , my mother would drive by with us kids in the car and say if your not good ill take you there and leave you. thats when it was the city's orphanage . Fond memory's from my childhood. Vic,
I'll be there both Monday and Tues. unless it's pouring.
I've got to shingle my insurance agents house on Wed/ Thurs.
See you there!
Walter
Walter,
As always, beautiful work.
I think you discussed this in a previous thread, so pls refresh my memory regarding how you attach your roof jack, and then how do you remove it once you've slated the roof?
Thanks
lek
Lek,
My homemade wooden brackets have 16 oz. copper "tabs" nailed to their backside. The stock is long enough so that the bracket can be positioned an inch below the exposure line and nailed into the roof deck above the top of the slate.
We then slate right over the "tabs"- so we don't have to leave any slates out.
When that roof pitch is complete- unnail the planks from the bracket, score the copper right at the exposure line and lift and flex the tab back and forth till it breaks.
Walter
Walter,
Pretty ingenious.
Thanks for the explanation.

To one and all..... I stopped over to see Walter Monday morning and got to go up on his job and was impressed at how organized neat and safe it was and felt. Thanks again Walter, its nice to see work being done on these old buildings and brought back to there original state of being. no junked on crap and plugged and pasted over before the owner gets back to see whats been done or going on. just done right. good quality honest workmanship, and a great view of my hometown.
Thanks again walter.
