Microsoft Project is a good one. I have found it to be intuitive, easy to use and can handle anything from the simplest to the most complex projects. I am not an expert by any means but I have used it for engineering projects and for renovating my house.
If you are not famaliar with this type of program, it basically involves listing all of the tasks required to complete a project, the man-hours required for each task and then linking the tasks together so that certains ones can not start until a previous task is completed. This helps you determine the project completion date depending on work schedule, crew size and equipment delivery. It also determines the "critical path" for the project, i.e., which series of linked tasks that are setting the minimum completion date. Hope this is helpful.
Good luck,
Kenneth
