Propane torch “Problem”.

BillHartmann | Posted in Tools for Home Building on February 1, 2004 05:59am

For years all I have had was a cheap $10 torch, but I have usually only been doing a fiting or two.

And at that I have been using my 73/37 electronic soldier, with the lower melting points (and lead).

But I have a big project and decided to get a good torch.

I got a BenzOMatic TS4000.

Now this is really a HUGE jump with the push button on/off and auto start. No fiddling with anything and don’ have to worry when I set it down. Just left go and it is off and squeeze and you have fire.

But I was disabled that this model does not have a flame adjustment and the flame is a little big. Might be a problem in some tight spaces, will be fine for this project.

But the “problem” is that when release the trigger and shut off the gas there is a monentary flame where there is a cross hole in the tube just above the valve mechanism. And then there is a “puff” sound. This is with MAP gas (approved for this unit).

Is this normal for these torches?

      No knob.

When I looked at the instruction I see that the TS7000 does come with an adjustment. But Lowes doesn't have that one or I would exchange it.

Bern web site is WORHTLESS. They have a large number of different products and nothing really differentiates between then or what features that they have.

And you can download the instrucitons and a catalog. But they are both just pdf copies of a folded booklet format hardcopies and hard to read on a computer.

And the instruction cover 50 million different versions and unless you know what you are looking far you can't find anything and even then the details are limited.

no knob ,,little red one on the trigger?..I HAD one of those..the auto igniter needs just so much gas to light..I remember a little (3/8 dia) red, more like a screw thingy..if it is the same one..if not and the flame is unacceptable..I'd exchange it, for an adjustable one. I switched to the hose type mapp torch, clip the tank on yer belt and ..well, turn the knob.

        Sorry 'bout that.

I 'd listen to Sphere.Get on with the hose. If you want to be a little faster get an acetylene/air setup. I'll never go back to propane. Still use mapp on small jobs. Greg

This is the one that I got.

The first one is the one that I got the TS4000. The red button is the on/off/trigger. It rotates about 45 degrees. But that is not a volume adjustment, just a lock to prevent the the button from being accidently pushed.

The second is the TS7000 which has the adjustment. It does not show very well in the picture. But is one the oposite side from the red button and just above the black handle.

But none of the home improvement stores or hardware stores have that one.

And to add more confusion Bernzomatic makes a whole batch of different units and it is imposible to figure out what have what feature and why you should use one or the other.

I was going to do this yesterday and today. But there are some difficult parts of it working with the old galvanized pipe that I did not want to be without backup if I ran into some problems. And we where scheduled to have an ice storm followed by 12" of snow so I waited. Now that has all been downgraded.

So I will hit some phumbing supply house, tools store, and welding supply and see what they make of it.

I forgot to post the picture and I could not add them in an edit.

Puleeeze..get the hose model. You will not have the piezo ignition and have to carry a bic lighter or a spark generater..( I smoke so the lighter is everpresent) but SOOO much more flexible and IMO easier. If ya need to fit in a tite space a tank is a PITA. ..Maybe , a supply house has the dirt on the self fired, I did own one, until I had to work in pump house too small for the tank to fit ...at 30 mile from the store and 5 degrees outside..you won't be sorry with the hose...

Oh, btw, disconnect the tank after yer done for the day.
