I have a feeling this may just be a dumb question, but here goes nothing…
I am replacing the brick moulding on my windows. The house is stucco and the window trim consists of only the brick moulding. This brick moulding extends out from the stucco maybe 1/4 inch at the most.
A lot of this is rotting as at one point it was poorly covered with aluminum. I need to hang awnings with this trim, and, as such, I need new, sturdy mouldings to handle it.
So, I have all of this new brick moulding with custom routing on the back to fit the Stucco profile. The only catch is that, as this is new stock, it is a bit smaller (not as deep), and only meets with the stucco flush at the surface.
Here’s the question: Is there any reason to have that 1/4″ protrusion other than aesthics? I can’t see a reason, but thought I’d ask the experts first.
Fell free to tell me if this is just a dumb question. ;o)

Hey! We can't just leave a dumb question hanging.<G>
IMHO, your moulding can be anything you want it to be - witness the hundreds of different profiles past and present. Mouldings serve as covers for joints between different materials, as stops for applied finishes (such as stucco) and to dress up an otherwise drap box (room) or facade.
The scant dimensions of current stock should not deter you from having a reveal proud of the stucco, if that is what you prefer. I'm sure there's still room to add a build out piece under the brick mould to give the new stuff some extra depth. The new brick mould is also most likely to be narrower than the old so the build out can also incorportate a stepped reveal if you wish.
Don't forget to post a picture of your work. Have fun.

That 1/4"X1 1/2" lath works real well he can add depth with another reveal and have the brick mould extend beyond the stucco.

Oh believe me, I've asked some dumb questions. ;o)
Thanks for the replies. I may experiment with blocking the backs with a 1/2" board. It may be more work than the results warrant, but I'd rather do it right once...
I first have to get some drip ledge to flash with top with, so that may ultimately be the deciding factor as to what I end up going with.
