I have a new home under construction for a customer that requires numerous Fypon window head treatments, both straight and arched. This particular house is getting {shudder} vinyl siding. I have used fypon trims in the past with wood sidings but this is the first time with vinyl siding as we don’t use it very often. My concerns are how to flash around the arched trims and where all the crown mould shaped ends of the straight headers meet siding. Does it make more sense to apply the fypon over the top of the vinyl siding? Anyone run into this and if so what have you done? Thanks for any responses.

Haven't done that before. I do almost no vinyl.
Both products will grom with the heat so the marriage system needs to acount for that. Are these particluar Fypon pieces thick enough to dado an edge out for a J-channel to seat the siding into?
Yes, I can rout out the edge of the fypon for j channel, however, on the arch top units, I'm not sure if there is a bendable j channel that could fit into this groove or not. I'm mostly concered about water penetration as vinyl siding is not a very tight system as it is. I may try and contact Fypon directly and see what they have to say.Thanks.

Contacting manufacturers is always a good first option. Sometimes they've got products just entering the stream that don't show in catalouges yet that solve problems. Their area reps also have hands on experience with how other builders have solved peculiar problems. I've got the # for Scott Knowlton - the New England rep if that's where you are.
BTW in their next catalouge, one of my jobs will be a featured photo.Excellence is its own reward!
Piffin,
I'm in upstste NY, don't know if they consider that part of their New England territory or not, but I'd like to try Scott if you've got a number. Many thanks.

Bishop,
I have done a lot of fypon and vinyl siding. Plenty of vinyl in central pa.
I have had equal success applying the fypon to the siding and to the sheathing.
If the window gets header trim only, I generally side first and apply the header, making sure to drill oversized holes throught the siding, caulk and screw through. Break the siding as often as possible to allow for expansion.
If casing the windows in fypon, I install the casing over the sheathing, padding out a half inch or so to allow for the full projection of the fypon. Then I side over and apply the header piece on top of the siding. The header will generally project an eighth or so past the casing. Drip cap the window and casing legs.
Properly installed, the opportunity for water penetration is no more than a 'j'ed out window.Tom
What the heck is Fypon? Never heard of it up here, but I've been out of the siding biz for a while.Alan Jones
