PSA ? H&L?

Sphere | Posted in Tools for Home Building on December 17, 2006 04:18am

Another thread just got me thinking ( always a bad sign)…do y’all prefer PSA or not?  I am a tried and true fan of PSA and have mass quanities of the stuff…

I see the advantage of H&L for the occaisions where ya swap up to finer grits often, but I save my PSA discs and use them on hand blocks often.

I am a pack rat when it comes to sandy paper..I use it till it is shiney smoothe…

What say you?

    H&L vote here...

I am of the belief that using dull sandpaper is prolonging misery and paying for it besides...

    lose/ lose

    psa is good for production

when you take it off you toss it.

sharp sandpaper is so much more efficient and so much cheaper than the labor spent using dull...

But dull sandpaper WILL build up yer arms for your defense of the State arm wrassling Championship!!!

I just hate switching all my sanders pads over, and I had a deal with 3M that I got TONS of PSA, for free..but I see now that the adhesive is getting old...no sticky no mo on old rolls of discs.

Also, have some Klingspore discs that the release paper is biatch to remove....

I think I need a shot up side the head to convert.

Yer right about dull paper, I may have mis-stated my actual practice, I don't over work the grit, I just get every mile outta it.

Did we arm wrassel?  Nah..we didn't, I'd still be sore if we did..you be one tuff one to beat, being all fiesty and such.

Hook And Loop is my preference. Dirt and dust can get stuck on the PSA leaving you with small gouges that have to get removed by more sanding. A good Auto Body jobber will be able to get some awesome blocks that are very comfortable for use with the Hook and Loop. 3M makes some of the best blocks.

When H&L came along, I jumped on it and never looked back...... just because it is so easy to switch grits and reuse the discs until they're dead.

Like you, I still have rolls of the PSA moldering on the shelf. It's hard to use up, since the only sander I have left that will take them doesn't have DC of any kind, and it spews the dust all over the shop. Almost have to use them outside.

Come to think of it, Duane, do you have any use for this machine? It's old, but a very nice AEG in perfect condition. I'd send along all those unused rolls of PSA discs.

I've already got enough sanders to last me thru this life, and maybe half of the next.

Sure, what ya want for it? I have cases of Tri-mite gold 5" mylar backed discs from 80-320 grt..the foil looking stuff..I think they discontinued it, it was TOO good, never wore out.

I have NO sander that has dust collection, yet.

Tell me what ya got..I have been a swapping fool of late...Ron sent me a drawknife ( talk about opposite ends of the spectrum) and I sent him a DW drill..Mike Hennessy, sent me a set of Hardie shears and hangers, And I sent Woodturner a PC drill and parts.

BTW, I just got a new woodboy w/ free blade from Hland....I trashed the old one cutting tenon pegs that had Glue on them..do not do that, the teeth clog.

Naw, I don't want anything for it, at least from you. It's probably worth a few bucks, but if I send it to you, then I don't have to make the effort to sell it. And it (and all that PSA sandpaper) will free up some shelf space in the shop. How about I box it up, send it off, and you reimburse me for the UPS charges? If that sounds ok, send me your address. How about a Senco pinner, brand new in the original box? I bought it when the pinner craze hit here a while back. But the thing aggravated me because it wouldn't countersink the pins (Senco said it's not made to do that), and sometimes left them hanging. I'm too old for that kind of hassle, so I just ordered up a Cadex, which is what I should have done in the first place. Some have told me that I could fix the Senco problem by filing off the tip some, but I never did.********************************************************

I can dig the sander, but not the pinner..I just ( well awhile ago) got a pinner from here..JRNBJ sent it. I just last week got Flloyd Tools to send me an asst. of pins. Like 150 bucks worth.

I have not even attached the air nipple yet...one of them tools ya want, but really don't need..at least in my exp.?

Sure, I'll gladly pay shipping..and a tip.  Look for an email..us PSA's gotta stick together...LOL  ( ok, bad pun).

Hook and Loop, I think the paper is better then the PSA, last longer, better quality. At least thats what I tell myself.

I to have some PSA sitting around waiting for the half life on the adhesive to expire!

I have an old Porter-Cable right angle random orbit. Basically, it's a right angle grinder with a random orbit head on it. I used it for stair rail installs to sand all the conections, sand anywhere that I needed a good glue bond, sand pencil marks off of oak, Etc, etc...........................

It uses, and I always swore by PSA discs. When Woodworkers was open I could buy a roll of 100 discs for the cost of a box of 12 H&L pads. When your using maybe 40 or 50 pads for a job, That's a big difference.
