Hi, Im trying to submit a drawing for a simple deck to the building inspector, but i cant draw the thing. Im pulling my hair out. Can anybody suggest an online tool or do I have to go to an architect, who will have a good laugh at my considerable expense.

There are places with generic layout on the web.
And you can certainly take the time to search for them.
Your lumberyard may have a book of drawings which might pertain to your deck.
But it shouldn't be that detailed to not come up with it with a few minutes of a pencil (with eraser) and a scale ruler.
Figure what scale you want to use to fill the paper, draw the deck as it appears from above-to scale. Draw the perimeter, showing pertinent beams under the frame. Show sides that run next to the house. Show stairs. Call out the joist sizes and centers, beams, how many steps etc.. Show dimensions.
Then draw a detail as seen from a representative view from the side. This should show the footing depth, the post size, connections could be listed, joist size and decking.
They should not require anything more.

If it helps, have a look at my plans here:

Most of the deck detail happens on the basement and first floor plans.
