So many of you have helped me over the last year or so. I wanted to post a picture to show the project in about mid flight. We tore the roof off with a crane about a week ago (I handled that part). My BIL is framing the 2nd story and I just coordinate material and work the first floor, remodeling-type stuff. I posted a pic before when I dug a basement under my house and people just erupted in disbelief. Hopefully this picture won’t stir up that stuff again.
On the right hand side of the second floor you can see a stack of OSB. There is one immediately behind that and it totals about 100 sheets. I almost laid an egg when I saw that, but I put a string line on the trussess (18″ deep, but span is very short, about 11′ or so), and measure no noticeable deflection, in fact a few still have a slight crown in them.
Probably have lots of more questions as we go forward and someday I’ll have the time to give back.
Thanks -MERC.

Is this the same house you were putting a basement under? You are really doing the extream makeover thing. Looks good. How about posting a before pic just to remind us?
Here is a pic of the house the day before the tear off. I'm having a hard drive problem, so I don't have a picture immediately available of the house from before anything started.

You say that's your own? Looks great. What precautions were taken for the weather?
Any reason why the ceiling joists were removed?
Was it a truss roof?
Are you renovating the first floor also?
I was a little startled when I saw no ceiling joist!
The framing looks great!
I would love to some more pics as you progress.
Good luck with it! ___________________________________________

Sorry to leave this thread hanging. We got busy getting ourselves weathertight before the big rains came through NC. And then we moved back into the house last weekend ("move-in" condition is subjective I guess).
The timing on the weather was unbelievable. The only rain we had between tearing off the roof and running tar paper was the day the subfloor was completed, but no walls or ridge had been set. So I had a nice solid floor to tarp and we managed the small leakage with buckets. Then we hit it hard for about a week and got the tar paper on about two hours before the skies opened up.
This week I have been cleaning up the yard and roofers have been here running shingles. We ran out of shingles so we are waiting for more to get here, hopefully tomorrow.
Here's some pictures of the finished framing. I'll post a few more pics when the roofers are done.

Looks good
Keep em coming
In So. Cal. I can't imagine that I could pull a permit to add a second story without extensive foundation work, yet I see this done all the time on East coast TV shows and now what appears to be your project. Do I just always miss the first 5 minues of the show, or the begining of these threads, or did you have to spend the big dollars on the foundation?
Oh boy, I hate to bring all this up again...Do a search in the archives for "Crawlspace digout" and enjoy the reading.
Yes I had to do some foundation work. Instead of underpinnings, I decided to dig a basement under my house. Now my foundation can support a small skyscaper.
That's all behind us now though.

Do you have a thread for that basement digout? I'm intrigued....

Thanks - That makes me feel better. I can understand why you would want to put that out of your mind!
Hey, AXE (formerly known as DJMerc?), did I miss the update pics on this one?
How is the house looking now? jt8

Did you get the paper on the roof and the windows covered? We got some weather headed our way...
