I had 2 foot vertical section of the cast iron waste pipe from my shower replaced with a piece of pvc clamped at both ends – is this a proper way to make this repair – (of course the plumber says that it is)?

Around here Fernco makes a coupling that looks like a two hose clamp (industrial) with metal/rubber banding for that purpose. I don't know if a pvc splice is limited by any weight restrictions, tho I think not. What's the story, you hire this guy and don't trust his work. My my, you've got bigger problems than a splice in the cast.
Potentially.
Best of luck

the upper cast should be supported w/ a clamp they make for just this. the PVC w/ fernco is fine.
(of course the plumber says that it is)?
Jake....why so negative about yer plumber that YOU hired?
Bad place to come (BT) and be so sarcastic about tradesman without evidence of poor workmanship. MAybe you should have done the job yourself being that you seem to be so with it, and so sceptical sounding of the trades.
Yeh, its fine to use PVC..just support it. My guess is that he did unlike you of him.

Had a similar problem in my home that I fixed myself. The old cast pipe got crushed ,but the problem was no where near 2 foot. Anyway, all I could use by the local codes was a rubber boot gizmo. Sounds similar to what has been described without the metal and only about 8 inches long. Back to the point though, PVC was not allowed.
