Question about installing siding
I am going to install vinyl siding over my wood panel siding. Going to put up house wrap and then foam board insulation first. I have a couple questions regarding how to handle some areas of my house. One is on two sides of the house the gables are layered with 3/4 board which sticks out further from the rest of the wood panel siding. Trying to decide how to go about getting one flat surface to install the siding on. Removing it and replacing it with the proper thickness board to match up the thickness of the wood siding looks to be a pain, especially since it goes behind the soft. I have a couple thoughts but wanted to see what suggestions there is from anyone. Thank you in advance for contributing.

You could furr the bottom section of wall with 1x4s run vertically. This creates two situations: You would have to nail the siding to at least some of the furring and use 2" nails in areas missing the furring. The other situation is 1x furring will likely flush out with the window trim. This may not be an issue if you brake the aluminum taller to accommodate. I usually trim everything first so I can turn a leg behind the siding and J channel.
Best wishes,

Thank you for your input. I decided the remove the wood siding. The house was built in the late 60's and I live in Chicago-zone 5. Going with R-6 rigid insulation board. Product I am using can be used as a vapor barrier, using proper sealing tape along with it of course. So not going to use house wrap now. I started removing the siding. The insulation board currently on it is the only thing attached to the framing. No wood sheathing under it. My first thought is to remove that also. Is there any reason I should not remove the old insulation board before installing the new rigid foam board? I am using a N95 mask while removing the siding just in case ithe insulatuon board under it has asbestos in it. I believe I read the rigid foam board I am using can be installed directly to the framing. Its Johns Manville R-6 Foil Faced Polyiso Foam Board Insulation.
I helped build a lot of houses from the '70s to the early '90s. I always hating working with the black board! Time was we'd install plywood just to the corners and black board everywhere else. Yes, it was fastened directly to the framing.
I'd remove it and go with the newer product!
I did remove it. The insulation board was labeled Allied Chemical/ Barret Division. IBI Rated R1.32. Did a search online and couldn't finds out if it has asbestos in it. You know if it does?
Also, how many screws with plastic caps should I install on each 4 × 8 sheet of the insulated board? Manufacture didn't really indicate that. What type of screws? Galvanized ok?
