In preparation for my very first tiling project, I have cut out and replaced a deteriorated section of subfloor in each of my bathrooms. The original subfloor is 1/2″ ply. The patches are 7/16″ osb — glued and screwed — and each covers an area about 4 feet square. I plan to sheet over the subfloor with a substrate of construction grade 3/4″ ply. Do I need to apply some leveling compound to compensate for the slight variation between the 1/2″ ply and 7/16″ OSB?
Thanks,
Michael

no, just use plenty of PL Premium between the plies.

I remember you asking about this project. Why don't you use 1/2" ply first then cover the floor with 5/8" underlayment plywood. If there is a gap under the underlayment, it will work up and down. It may break or pull your fasteners loose, squeak and cause the tile to break. Your approach doesn't make any sense. 3/4" construction plywood has gaps in the inner layers. Those could cause problems down the road. You should use materials that are meant for the job. 7/16:" OSB is not for subflooring either, it has little strength and may deflect. Instead of solving your problems, you are creating more.
