so it does catch you in the bridge of the nose...
about 24 - 32" up from the stove...

WOW!!! What a Ride!
Thanks for your response. How much of a difference does the height make in terms of effectiveness? Will a 24" high hood ventilate much better than a 30" high one? (30" would probably work best for the height of the main user in this case, in terms of headroom)

My Vent-A-Hood is set about 34" from the cooktop. I like it higher up so when I'm using the barbeque, or attending to something on the back burner I don't have to worry about bumping my head. Plus if you have a nice backsplash it looks more imposing with the vent hood higher IMHO.
the higher up the less efficent...
32 - 34" is common too.... is there a cabinate above the stove...

Not really. More "suction" doesn't help much if you can't reach the back burners. Also, getting more blower motor is not always the right answer, either. (It's possible to get enough blower to extinguish the flames on the gas burners--not generally a good thing.)
Like most things in life, it's a compromise at best. 30" above ct/range usually is about right.Occupational hazard of my occupation not being around (sorry Bubba)
most home vent-a-hoods don't do alot... and yes closer is better... but it really has alot to do with the volume of air your hood moves... some just "filter the air" and blow if back at you... some will suck a napkin out of your hand .... I use to build alot of commerical kitchens and you could never move enough heat & air & smoke out... but then you get into "make up air" to replace the air ur suck'n out... takes alot of time balance'n in & out....
what & how you cook has a ton to do with it...

Greetings & Welcome to BT, first off.
Most cooktop & range manufacturers seems to specify 30" above the unit for cabinets, so the hood usually monts there.
But, I generally figgure that the top will be about 66" above the finished floor. Where the duct goes, well that's down to the hood mfgr.
If you know the models of range/cooktop & hood, you usually can look up the installation info online.
The installation instructions probably specify the minimum height. I think it's a fire safety issue. As suggested above, 30" is pretty common. It's probably not a good idea to go lower than specified.
