Questions on applying water based spar urethane
I have built a mahogany outdoor table top and have covered it twice with areosol oil based spar urethane. Can I apply a water based urethane over that? Best research I can come up with is to thin it a lot and apply with a wiping pad (eliminating bubbles and brush strokes I assume). Any tips or tricks? ok to apply in sun, etc?
Back story: I had an umbrella attached to a glass top table. Huge Santa Ana winds up ended my table and shattered the glass. New tables aren’t cheap and almost always have chairs attached that I don’t need.
I priced putting glass over the wood to protect the finish but this is about $160 1/4″ glass with center hole for umbrella… so I need a thicker finish that won’t show all the little marks that my current (thin spar) shows.

As long as you clean it, sand the surface to rough it up, and remove all the dust you should be fine.
Read the label or mfg site data related to sunshine. I would think you want to make sure the whole thing is still wet by the time you finish. Get a wool applicator and put several thinner coats.
Make sure to stir well, especially if you are using other than a gloss finish. the suspended plastic bits can settle out of other finishes, leaving gloss. If this happens, later coats will fix the extra gloss.
Keep an eye out for drips along the sides.
