Questions using excavated sand and landscaping gravel for paver patio project

I am adding 1000 sqft of 1 sqft by 2″ interlocking pavers to my side yard and back yard in Decatur TX. If possible I want to reuse the materials I have. The front yard is landscaped with coarse gavel that I want to eventually replace and the excavated soil for the patio is sandy and free of most organic material (fine sand with some pebbles). For the paver base, my plan is to excavate the sandy soil down about 8 inches, lay down landscaping cloth and covered it with 3 inches of compacted coarse gravel from the front yard topped 3 inches of the excavated sandy soil. Question is does this sound reasonable?

not from Texas. If I did it I would compact in lifts stone sand stone sand stone sand to limit the sand later sifting down through the stone. I'd still top and pack with a couple inches of paver recommended base.
