Quick question about blown cells
I’m blowing (tonight!) some cellulose over FG batts of varying depth in my attic. How deep does the cellulose have to be effective? There are some areas where I have 18″ of batts but there are gaps around the trusses.

just an educated guess.....6" minimum
Yeah, that would be my thumb suck -- 6" if you're trying to reduce air infiltration. Of course the more the better.
God is REAL, unless explicitly declared INTEGER
Thanks - temp dropped below 0, will continue tomorrow. I did dense pack mooney walls last summer and this is the first time for loose fill - it seems way to fluffy to do any good.
reduce your airflow for open blow if you have an airvalve
you doing this with 2 people ?Mike Hussein Smith Rhode Island : Design / Build / Repair / Restore
Yes, me in the attic and child labor at the hopper. No air control on the HD blower but the hopper has a control - full open. I'm sure it will settle, it's just a contrast from the dense pack.
hey... you know we ran out of hose on our last blow.... needed about another 20'
so we hooked up our vacumn hose to the end.... roy said he liked the flow better in the attic blow, also the 6' of rigid pipe on the end let him extend his reachMike Hussein Smith Rhode Island : Design / Build / Repair / Restore
mike, if you put you'r hand infront of the discarge pipe you can angle the pipe up and the insulation wil fluff up and spread out ,when you get an area of about 8 feet or so then take a 2/2 and level it out to a flat and consistant depth. you then move to you'r next area and do the same. good luck. jimbotg
Mike, the blower that I rented from HD had what I thought was constant air flow and a plate that adjusted the size of the opening from the hopper down to the blower. Are you suggesting for denser attic insulation that one should increase the size of the opening and thus the rate at which cellulose is blown?Al
