Here in Texas, new companies are popping up and selling “radiant barrier attic systems”. It looks like nothing more that silver paint sprayed on the attic side of the roof on existing houses.
Is this an effective way to reduce energy bills “by as much as 30%” as they say, or are these companies the 21st century version of snake-oil salesmen?
Any and all opinions appreciated.

My opinion.
If you are going to vent your attic...then a radiant barrier installed during construction is a good idea.
If you want to improve performance on an existing home...The "silver paint" would probably not be cost effective. A proffesional energy audit is your biggest bang for the buck.
