I’m going to replace the old radiator in my bathroom with a shorter, longer version to gain some much needed storage space. Is this something I should leave to a professional or can I do it? I’ve done just about everything in my house but it seems like it could be a tricky project. Also, has anyone had any experience with the towel warmer radiators I see advertised in Fine Homebuilding? They seem like a good alternative to a regular bulky radiator.

experience with the towel warmer radiators
Favorite hotel in Scotland is the only place I've been with the towel warmers on steam heat (still coal fired* a few years ago even) and they were great! Had a local knob thermostat on them. The low profile (recall 2 ft high by 4 inches deep by 4 ft wide) heating radiator kept the room toasty in December and March in the 20s (edit, minus 6C) never been there when colder.
The towel radiator was the only heat source in the bathroom, kept it as I had set the thermo.
As to DIY, you betcha!
* Last time there was late winter 2004, still marvel at again experiencing the smell of coal burning in the air, would really have wondered what that smell was it was if had not had the memories from childhood of that acrid, but still warmingly pleasant, (odor?smell, fragrance, stink? - nostrils of the smeller?) rememberance. First went to lowland Scotland in the winter in 1999, was somewhat amazed that coal was still burned for home heating.
