"Looking for a ranch or southwestern idea."
Are you looking for Design ideas or methods of doing it.
For a SW look I would think about a straight edge, zip-zag "lighting bolt" design. And that would be much easier to do than the more typical S or double S curves.
But I might also pierce the beam with a 1 or maybe 3 diamond cutouts.

I was looking for design ideas. There's going to be about 65-70 tails to cut, so I may be back looking for method ideas. My first thought is a luan template for a bearing guided router...roughed out first with a jig saw.

Try a little research on the green & green cloud drops......On a hill by the harbour
My idea is all straight cuts so you you don't need to do any finish after the jig saw.
I guess diamond cutouts I would drill a big hole and then cut it with a jig saw.
However personally I would do adifferent pattern. I would use a double S curve, "cloud lift" pattern and round over the edges. I would also round over the end all of the cross pieces.
That is inspired by Greene and Greene. But I don't think of that as being SW.
I have attached a picture of mantle that I did with G&G styles corbels.
