Rafters + Trusses on same house
Hello!
My wife and I are building our house. I will be building the roof with traditional rafters on the left and right side of the house (about 65% of the house or more). Those rafters will be 2×10, resting on exterior 2×6 wall plates. The middle of the house where we’ve got living room, dining room, kitchen, etc, we’re going to be using trusses so that we can reach all the way across (32′ 8″). Those trusses will likely have 2×4 top chords and 2×6 bottom chords, the overall height to roof sheathing will be lower than the rest of the house.
Can I just add extra plates under the length of house that will use trusses?
Thanks!

The truss manufacturer should be able to make the trusses with whatever heel is required to match the rafters.
edit, quick scratch to show how truss heel might be adjusted.
Thanks! I don't know why I hadn't thought about just asking the truss shop to modify them to match the rafter portions.
That drawing makes perfect sense!
You might find trusses to be more cost-effective for the whole house.
You can mix walls with different top plate thickness (as many as you want to pay for), or you can cut the wall studs to different lengths for different parts of the wall.
Hey UncleMike. We did the figures and trusses for the entire house would be about $3,900 *more* than stick building. ?
I'll check with the truss shop and see what sort of modifications they can do for us. If they can't, I'll likely play around with plate heights. Thanks!
If you add to the plate, make sure you get the uplift connectors approved to span the extra thickness.
Thanks for the advice, tfarwell!
Hi Jellybean, is your project completed? How did you tie your common rafters on L and R to your middle portion of the truss roof system?
Can you post a couple of pics? Thank you.
