I built posts for a rail/balluster system on the 2nd floorof my house. First I mounted double 2×4’s then clad them in 1×6 pine bisquited, and face nailed in a few spots. Now I am trying to come up with a nice looking top for them. I made one as an experiment: I used a 3/8 r.o. bit to create a first layer out of 1x, then used a classic roman ogee to step down 1/4″ on all sides for a 2nd layer but that leaves me with a flat top. Boss doesn’t like that, she says everyone will just leave their drinks there! any suggestions?

Add something in the middle of your tops that will break up the flat spot and shoo away drinks. For instance, you could make another piece of wood like your first one, but smaller.
I think that your significant-other has a great point. It is likely that someone would leave their drink there. And If they did, it would be VERY likely that it would get bumped, would fall and break. This must be avoided.
So.....make your current toppers a bit thicker, then drill a drink-sized hole down through the middle.
This will prevent numerous disasters.
Don't forget to line the bottom with cork - to absorb the moisture : )
I never met a tool I didn't like!
