Are rain dispersion gutters (a screen system that scatters rain out 2-3 feet away from the house) a good way to eliminate downspouts or a bad way to get rid of rainwater? I can’t find any independent studies on them.

Some people here don't like gutters. I think it is because they live in a real cold climate and the ice pulls them down.
I live in a pretty mild climate so I like gutters. I take the downspout to a 4" drain system so it is gone.
Some neighborhood friends had some and were pleased with the way they work.
phatmoose,
It really depends on a lot of variables.. how big and steep the roof is, how heavy is the rain, the pitch of land, what happens when the rain finally does hit the ground(is it onto brush, grass, shrubs trees etc.. etc.
Several years back I tried only a 33' section on my 2-story house. The house is in a fully wooded lot and I thought the rain screen would eliminate my need for climbing up and cleaning gutters.
I was wrong....cleaning gutters was easy compared to trying to remove oak racemes, maple twirlies, and poplar tree flower hulls from between the fins on the rain dispersion gizmos.
The 33' section came down and the box gutter went back up...a leaf blower or kids hockey stick works well to clean the gutters.
