I have some questions regarding the type of hangers to be used on a new gutter installation for an older home. Although I will end up needing a new roof in 5 to 8 years, I need gutters now. Quotes have included using spikes, ice hangers which are drilled into the facia, and a hanger (drilled into facia)/nailed into roof combo. I live in the Utah where we get about 3 ft of snow a season (in a good year). Facia appears to be attached using finishing nails. Thanks for the help.

I think McFeely's sells a screw ( 5/16 hex head) that replaces the gutter spike, it can be reused, put those instead of spikes, and have at it.

I used the McFeeleys to repair my gutters. There are two varieties, an AL model with a square drive hex head, and an epoxie coated steel model with a square drive pan head. Our local lumberyard also carries the latter. Either work fine, through the AL are easier to drive with ####hex bit. The threads are oversized to grab the edges of the hole in replacement situations. You'd likely want to predrill both the gutter and wood for a new install. After putting them in, I'd have no issues about doing chinups off the gutters. They are that strong and secure.
Wioth three feet of snow and a fascia attached with finish nails, you won't have gutter or fascia by spring - that is - unless you make sure the attachments are well seated into the raftertails or if there is a sub-fascia, into it.
