Rain noise from roof vent cap
We recently installed an island range hood with rigid ducting venting through roof. The problem is, when it rains, the sound transmits through the ducting down to the range hood. This is very loud and sounds like rain on a tin roof right above my head. Is there a way to alleviate this problem? Some kind of insulator or cover that can be added to the roof vent perhaps?

The handyman's secret weapon -- duct tape!! Or, whatever other option you can find for a self-adhesive layer on top of the vent. A layer of roof coating/roofing tar would also work.
Another use for cutup old tire sidewalls
A backdraft damper in the line and plausible for your fan will break up and dampen the sound. Some 45’s will also help if that pipe goes straight up and out. With a clean grease filter, I wouldn’t worry too much about gumming it up, but......
Contact the hood manufacturer and get some advice.
Sounds to me like it might be a sound to learn to enjoy.
Sounds. I have to agree there can be an appreciation for natural sounds. Recently here we had a frozen high river, warm up, rain, ice breaking up flowing then backing up below an interstate bridge......interesting sounds every night as the various transitions came and went.
Last week, 40+ sustained winds through the river bank woods. Occasional gusts to 60..... man, like a million people whispering.
Back to the above, the daughters family have a large cfm hood they use often. Maybe 10-15 ft of 8” pipe with 2- 45’s taking it up below the sheathing to exit. Can’t hear sleet much less rain below that big as*’d hood when not in use. In use, the hood acts like a megaphone.
Spring training on tv in March with some snow on the ground, now that’s nice.
Yeah, we recently moved from our suburban home of 43 years into a condo. I do miss the sounds of the old place, as it gave the house a heatbeat -- furnace, condensate pump, humidifier, water softener, all playing their notes of the symphony in turn. The new place is kind of creepy, since it sounds like there are ghosts in the attic.
Thanks for the input. Duck tape is sounding pretty good. LOL
Hey, did you get this figured out? We just installed a range hood and ran the ducting effectively vertical out through the roof. During heavy rain you can hair the echo of the rattling from the rain on the vent cap. Been trying a ton of things but to no avail yet. Would love to know if and how you got this solved? Thanks!
You need to look to the automotive world. There are any number of self adhesive sound deadening mats available at your local auto parts store.
Dynamat being one.
You can also use spray on coatings like lizard skin as well.
Great, thanks! Will try. Assume you spray or attach the mat to the top of the vent, i.e exposed area outside the roof?
You could or you can wrap the duct leading to the roof. Autozone or advance auto parts or whoever should be able to fix you up
