I have a home with an 8 foot plate height. I want to add a second floor and also raise the first floor plate height to 9 feet. I am wondering what the possibilities are structurally for raising the plate height.

If an 8 foot second floor is OK, why not just lift the whole structure and build a new 9 foot first floor from scratch?
