rare earth magnet on a cordless drill?

plumbsquare | Posted in Tools for Home Building on April 18, 2006 08:13am

I know nothing about electric motors. Will mounting a rare earth magnet on the casing of my cordless drill effect the motor in any way? I was going to epoxy a magnet (a small one) on the back of the drill to hold bits and such. Then I started thinking (always risky), isn’t that just an electromagnet spinning around on the other side of the casing? Am I going to disrupt the flow of energy, or chi, or something?

    we don't know either...

go ahead and glue it on there and let us know what the out come is so we either do it ourselves or steer clear...

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming

ryobi 18 volt has one its on the handle above where the battery plugs in away from the motor .

It might not be a good idea.  The rare earth magnet that close to a rotational field would likely set up induced cross-gauss fluxing fields, and could turn the whole thing into a small breeder reactor.

Oh, sorry.  That was my script submission to the next Star Trek series.  Forget it.

you would certainly have the only universal / somewhat permanent magnet 3 pole motor on the planet, which could likely run slower , overheat then open a wormhole to infinity

    be sure to take pictures......:>)

Unlikely to be a problem, at most I'd suspect you might get a bit more vibration, but no net decrease in power.  Try a quick test:

Drill in one hand, magnet in the other, run the drill.  Bring the magnet from a few feet away to the place you propose to glue it onto the drill.  Does the operation of the drill change in any way?  If not, go ahead and glue.

I think John's got the right idea. I'll try a test tomorrow and let you know what happens. Thanks,Tim

We want a full report if you find the secret of nuclear fission.

We already have the fission thing figured out.

Fusion is the next big thing.

So if I understand this all correctly P Bush doesn't need to start a war with Iran. Your military just needs to develop and drop smart magnets to stop their nuclear weapons program!!! ;-)

They're both pretty much figured out, but fusion less so than fission.  The difference is what they do with atoms:

Fission is splitting up the big ones like Uranium and Plutonium, A-bomb and power plant technology.

Fusion is smacking together little ones like hydrogen, H-bomb technology, and the way the sun and stars work.

The main thing that's on the nuclear punch list is coming up with a way to use fusion in power plants.

Pretty much the way I understood. But I had them backwards.I'll have to try to remember... Fusion, fusion, fusion.=0)Thanks.I think fusion is supposed to make a safer power plant if they can figure it out, right ?

Yes, in theory, fusion should make a safer and much more powerful power plant.

Not to worry. All is well. Today I combined the biggest rare earth magnet I have (1 inch disk) and my battered old Makita cordless impact driver. I'm afraid it was pretty anticlimactic. There's plenty in there to attract the magnet. I can stick it anywhere on the plastic casing near the motor, but I can detect no change in the sound, performance, or the "feel" of the tool. A couple of transformers near the building site blew up, but as far as I can tell that wasn't my fault. At least no one's proven it yet.I'm gonna glue a half inch disk right on the side of that sucker and damn the consequences. Thanks for all the cautionary advice.Tim

There was just a special on PBS about the Earth's magentic field geting weaker and likely to reverse polarity... maybe we found the culprit.  Put down that drill before we all have to buy new compasses.

          1. DanH | Apr 20, 2006 09:33pm | #35

No, he'd better hang onto the drill. Its magnetic field is the only thing protecting him from cosmic rays!

This is slightly off topic, but I have this thing in my toolbox - it's two u shaped rare earth magnets fixed together to form an "O", and it makes ferrous metal objects magnetic when I chuck them into a drill and spin them inside the field. It's great for small parts or drivers/bits, and spinning them the other way will un magnetize them.

As far as I know, it has never upset the time/space continueum...

Not a good idea because all you are going to do is attract every metal chip and metallic junk that comes close to your drill.  The next time that you have drill a hole in a piece of steel run your magnet next to it and then pick off all of the chips.  Loads of fun,  even better when your drill bit is dull and you get slivers!  After that decide if you want that attached permanently to your drill.
