Work is so slow. So I thought I’d get my truck painted. Maaco was having a half off sale. So I took it by. $1300. Ouch. Its probably a fair price, but my budget is kinda lean these days. So I figured I’d save some money, and prep it myself, not really View Imageknowing what I was doing.
Fortunately, a neighbor who does know came over, and gave me some free advice. And loaned my this tool: a dent puller. Pretty handy. Drill a buncha holes, screw it in, and bang the dent back out. keeps the bondo to a minimum.
So then I thought I’d get some spray paint cans, and do a little detailing before I brought it back to the paint shop. Painted some red, so far. Not sure how far I’ll go before I bring it in to have a pro finish it, but right now I’m thinking I may do the whole thing, if it works out that way. Its just a work truck after all. We’ll see.

this was a pretty gnarly dent. The puller did a lot of the work, then bondo and sanding, primer, more sanding, sanding. It may not be perfect, but I keep telling myself, its just a work truck.View Image"...craftsmanship is first & foremost an expression of the human spirit." - P. Korn

So I was gonna do the top part white, but the center panel in beige, but all they had was this light yellow, which I thought looked cool. But my wife thinks it looks a little tacky (she used another, politically incorrect ethnic term - but its her people on her dad's side she's making fun of, so she can get away with it). She thinks I'm crazy for painting my truck with spray paint cans anyway. Sure, she can make fun of me. She got the new car, and I got a beater Ford. "Don't get any overspray on my car, honey". Grrrrr.
And I have to say, I was a little disappointed with the way it looks myself. Too bad the color choices are so limited, but its just a work truck (where have I heard that before?) So anyway, I guess I'm back to red on the bottom and the rest white.View Image

I'm definitely a fan of the red and white. Then again, my 94 F150 also happens to be red and white...
I like the yellow/red combination, but only if you keep it 2-tone. That is, paint over all of the white.
Consider using pinstriping (maybe black) on top of where the red meets the white/yellow. I think it would soften the transition and make it look more professional.
And thanks for another interesting thread.

So why not just paint the whole thing yourself? It's just a work truck. Get a spray gun, a compressor, and a can of paint from Napa. How bad a job could you do?"Put your creed in your deed." Emerson

if you want it to look better than spray cans...
get the harbor freight HVLP sprayer... i think it's $39... if you don't want to spring for $100 a gallon automotive paint & hardner.... get some industrial enamel... or I've had good luck with Tractor paint from any co-op... less than $25 gallon... thin it per the HVLP flow cup... and wet the area around your truck with a garder sprayer and lemon juice... the wet keeps the dust down and the lemon juice keeps bugs away.....
mask it well.... start at the top and keep a wet edge.... use 2 coats.... then thin it some more ... and one last coat... this last coat with alot of thinner will get rid of the dry lines and dry over spray by melting it all in... the thinner coat should wet the whole surface area... do not unmask for at least 4-5 hours... then let it sit in the sun... it will look better & better as it sits in the sun for a few days...
i've painted alot of equipment & trailers this way... and my dump truck... 10 years later the dump truck still has a bit of a shine and i've only washed it 3x in the 10 years...
(if you have an airless with a fine tip... that works lalso and you don't have to thin it as much but more dry spray to melt in)

I have a fifteen hundred dollar Capspray and an eighteen hundred dollar AccuSpray HVLP. I like their results so much I'd definitely vote for a Harbor Freight cheapy. In a pinch, remember that the old Kirby vacs had what could be called close to the first HVLP and they actually worked pretty good. The only big difference between cheap ones and mine is that I don't have to thin as much.
I have painted the hulls of my pontoon boat twice in the last 18 years and they are still holding up great in salt water.

My roofing crew beat on it but could not destroy it. When i gave it away because the cab rusted off it was still running like a swiss watch.

I have a '83 F250 4 x 4 460, I changed carb & intake to Eldelbrock & have dual exhaust, still not the most fuel efficent loaded ( 11 mpg. Can.) but my dad's 1995 Ford F150, 2 wd. only gets 11 empty ( first F150 '92 got 8 & 9)!! I also know of a few 300 6's only getting 10 - 12. That's why I have a GMC now & use the Ford for hunting and hauling firewood.
I got the '86 F350 quad cab. 460, 4 bbl, 4 spd. Flowmaster exhaust, all pollution stuff was removed. 7 MPG empty, full of fire wood, uphill or down..it don't care. 7 MPG.

make it authentic - use a broom - "there's enough for everyone"
I decided to try the roller after reading a post here by Forrest, and I found this thread on the internet - this Charger was painted with a roller. If you read the thread, it explains it. (93520.9)
The gist is this: use Rustoleum enamel thinned with mineral spirits to the consistency of water, prep thoroughly just like a spray job (no primer required), roll with a wienie roller (and foam brush or rattle can for the hard to get spots), it dries very fast, wetsand with 600 to 1500 grit every two coats, apply several coats, wetsand with 1500 then polish with Turtle Wax Polishing compound.
I didn't follow that exactly, but that's the main outline. Your mileage may vary.View Image

Yeah, all good points, on the temp spray booth (venting). I think the roller painting is controversial, but it worked out just fine for me. My mechanic is into vintage cars, and even he was surprised at how nice it turned out. I mean, not like show-car quality, but nice enough (I'm sure I could do a little better on my next one!) And he verified that it is a really tough paint.
Guys who are really into their cars would never do what I did, but hey, I look at a lot of the worktrucks on the road today, and a lot of them have really thrashed paint. I mean, this truck is 15 years old! So I figure its a step up from a lot of other work trucks, and looks clean enough for the jobsites I run around with!View Image"...craftsmanship is first & foremost an expression of the human spirit." - P. Huck,
Did the maaco thing two years ago to my wifes car before selling it, came back looking great, beyond what we expected. Last summer we decide to do my van, this one we are keeping so I put alot of prep time into it myself, sand blasted the rust, removed all the chrome, pulled bumpers, grill, mirrors, side & rear windows & on & on.
Same shop, same owner,
Took two weeks longer than they said & looks like SHID, looks like they sanded it with 80 grit to prep & didn't bother to sand and areas that were sand blasted by me, thin spots in the paint & rusting already, so much #### in the paint you could tear your skin on it and has a almost orange peel look, looks like it was never buffed
From a distance it looks better than it did but its not holding up already.
This was the more expensive paint job than our car.
Talked to the owner & salesman when picking it up & was meet with attitude.
The topper was when I got in to leave, the brake pedal went to the floor, no brakes. A line had broken while they had it and no one even mentioned it, the salesman just drove it when he brought it around for me. You think he could have said something to the effect of like "You know you don't have ANY brakes"
Next time I will do it myself, Keep up the good work & best of luck Huck

Carrying a plank and busting out a window. Spilling a box of nails... etc, etc.

Problem is, theft is a big problem in my neighborhood. Furthermore, technically the city ordinances prevent me from parking a work truck with so much as a ladder rack, if I'm self employed (employees can park a moving van with a billboard pasted to the sides, thats OK). So I don't really want to draw too much attention to my vehicle. Just a clean looking work truck, and back on the road ASAP, that's my goal here!
