Folks,
I posted this question yesterday but the discussion seems to have gone away so I’m posting it again. I wouldn’t think that this would violate any of Andy’s constraints…
I’m almost finished hanging the drywall in my addition and I’m starting to get prices for the taping. I have about 200 4×8 sheets in all. But there are lots of angles and some sloped walls (I’ve posted some pictures in the gallery under “Fish shingle update”) so I’d call it a challenging job. The first price I got for the taping is $.40 per sq ft. That comes out to about $2500 for the addition. Is that a reasonable price? I’m in the Northeast (on Cape Cod). I am planning to get a couple more prices but I thought I’d do a sanity check. Thanks in advance.
Roger

Roger,
Have a look in the business folder.
I would think this one may not be around long.

*Roger, I'm CT and that'd be a good price.40 cents a foot was the going rate for 12' sheets about 7 or 8 years ago. We're up to about 60 cents a foot now, 8' sheets can be a few cents more.
*Thanks Mongo. You too Luka. That's all I need to know so they can "can" the thread now if they want! Have a great day...Roger
*That doesn't sound out of line. Tapers I know have a higher rate when they follow non professional hangers. Especially if you have an oddball job.
*Need to be a litle more specific.Taping is ONE step. Is this job gonna be JUST taping?Taping and FLOATING? Taping/floating/TEXTURING?The more work involved, the more steps it takes. The mor steps, the more it costs. Here, you can get an AVERAGE new home tpaed/floated/textured for about .75 sq ft. Each additional difficulty adds to the cost.James DuHamel
*Jim, I've hung lots of sheetrock professionally (but it was a few years ago). But I did have some help from inexperienced brothers-in-law and I have to laugh at a few things they did. I'll be spending a few hours going over thier work and setting a few screws...James, it's just taping, although I don't know what you mean by floating... Everything is smooth finish, no texture.I had originally planned to just hire someone to hang blueboard and do a skim coat but I couldn't get anyone to give me a price. I think the odd ball hanging drove them away. So when it was time to move on, I decided to hang regular sheetrock myself (I can only watch so much football) figuring it might be easier to find a taper than a skim coat guy.So it sounds like the $.40 is actually cheap. Now I'm wondering why it's so cheap. I'll try to get a couple more prices and let you know how they turn out.
*40 cents is the price the tapers are paid as subs... by subs to GCs.60 cents is full fair. Insurance... moonlighting... sidejobs... all effect price... cash jobs...Take the 40 cents deal... go see his work if you can. A good taper can make good money at 40 cents and a killing at 60 cents.A bad taper will never make squat.near the stream,aj
*Thanks, aj, that makes sense. One question I forgot to ask the guy was who installs the metal corners? I would guess that would be considered part of the hanging and not part of the taping. So that would not be included in the $.40. I'd rather do it myself anyway so it's not a big deal...
*Tapers put up the metal with crimpers.near the stream,ajActually, I almost always hire it out all to the same company or do it all in house... So I have no clue if one or the other prefer to metalize the corners.near then stream typing with errors at the speed of light,ajOh to have just 2 brews in the veins... time to run the pool table.
*Wow, .60 per sq.ft. ! We just had a commercial building done in PA for .37 per sq.ft. and that included all of the fire taping above the grid.
*No matter what you end up paying be sure to check out the finishers work BEFORE he gets to your place. My buddy hired a pro finisher to complete a job after firing a couple of hacks. Turns out this PRO's job was worse than the hacks. The pro was charging .31/SF to tape and finish. The pro tried a second time and still didn't get it right. Said he wasn't getting paid enough to come back again and walked. And this was his sister's house, to boot. What a family jerk. Three months later wanted me to hire him. NOT after I had to finish his work.
