Rebuilding Box Gutters

tkiser | Posted in Construction Techniques on December 30, 2008 05:51am

Does anyone have an old (over 150yrs) diagram of how to construct a box gutter? We are getting ready to rebuild some and looking for some ideas.

Thanks

Tim

There is a thread going on here currently by Sphere. I will see if I can conjure him up.

Another or two by either Slateman or seeyou.

The search function might get you there.................

      Suarepeg,

You've got my handle down incorrectly. There is a younger man from Vermont who has the shortened version you wrote , but he's only been on here a few times.

I would get the SMACNA hand book for sheet metal.  Also on the Slate Roof Message Board there been alot post on box gutter info there.  And the Traditional Roofing Mag listed there on the left side of the SRMB home page, would have alot of great info to read first before a your install happens.  Hope this help, let me know if you have any other questions.

I don't have any diagrams, because they are not all constructed the same, but have rebuild a lot.

First you have the elements, such as bottom board that sits on a lookout and a lamb's leg that adjusts the bevel board. and ypu have the pitch to factor in.

Best I can tell ya is copy what was there but make it better. Better by using better fastners ( screws V nails) and be working with a string line for straight.

How about posting a good picture of the front again. This is the same house as the door thread is it not ??

How steep is the roof pitch ? How many sq.'s of roofing going to this gutter ?

     construct a box gutter

My question would be WHY??  Is this for something on the historical register or governed by a local preservation/architecture issue?

If not, do like I did with the rotten box gutters on Mom's 100+ YO house - tor'em off and built a 10" overhang on the 12/12 roof.

WHY is we are restoring NOT remodeling. I have worked on some many jobs where the HACKS do as cheap and a bad job figuring who is going to get a ladder and climb up to see what we did. That is not how we operate.

I had to buy a new 4# soldering iron OUCH $51.00 for the iron $2.22 for the handle that split hen i put it on. I have a turbo torch that I use for plumbing can I use it to heat up the iron? If not what type of tip would I need?

            Thanks

I'll be updating my thread in a minute and you can see the oven that is used. I borrowed it from SeeYou's main man, my ex co-worker. I don't see how you could heat the single iron and make any headway..or have any fun.

I use a Sievert torch for gutter liner and smaller jobs that won't take all day. You MAY beable to use a soldering tip that fits on a propane nozzle, but I've never tried that..it's small and kinda skimpy surface wise.

You can also heat your iron in a charcoal brazier, but man, thats a lot of trouble for gutter seams, I'd buy a Sievert...expect to pay..sit down...500 bucks.

Thats why I make the big bucks, LOL to pay for my toolage addiction..

            >>>>>>>I had to buy a new 4# soldering iron OUCH $51.00 for the iron $2.22 for the handle that split hen i put it on.A 4# copper is way too big to solder terne box gutter liner with especially for a novice. You'll have Popeye arms before you're done. Two 2# coppers would be much more effective. One in the heat while you're soldering with a hot one. >>>>>>>>>>I have a turbo torch that I use for plumbing can I use it to heat up the iron?Yeah - that'll work, but you'll need to make a holder for the copper - it'll take several minutes to heat the copper the first time and a minute or two to sweeten it each time.Pre-tin your joints or they'll likely fail if you have more than 20' or so of gutter.
